BAKA BEYOND - East To West

Marrying traditional Celtic melodies and instruments with West African traditional rhythms and modern musical stylings like Highlife and Afro-pop may not seem like the most natural idea. But in the hands of Baka Beyond--a group that takes the term world fusion seriously, as it's roughly split between Celtic and West African musicians--the combination makes for a delicious musical stew that goes down smoothly. It's been five years since the group's last album, and longtime fans who discovered the band through its hugely successful Spirit of the Forest release in 1994 won't be disappointed. East to West is probably the group's most accomplished work to date.

Founded by English guitarist Martin Cradick and singer Su Hart, who lived with the Baka pygmies in the rainforest along the Cameroon-Congo border in 1991, Baka Beyond stands out from a world fusion crowd that includes groups like Deep Forest and the Afro-Celt Sound System by delving a little deeper than most into both the African and Celtic roots of its music. On East to West, instead of dropping in the occasional sample for exotic effect, the group places the disparate elements together in a live context with thrilling results: "Awaya Baka," where a chorus sung by Baka children melds with Paddy Le Mercer's Celtic whistle amid a funky Highlife groove; "An Gwirder," where Nii Tagoe's West African balafon and Alan Burton's bagpipes, based on similar pentatonic scales, mix seamlessly; and "Wandering Spirit," which fuses two Scottish jigs with a traditional Baka dance rhythm.

PAPA WEMBA - Le Voyager

Papa Wemba's pure talent and angelic voice can be traced to his mother, who was a professional funeral singer in Zaire. In the '70s, Zaiko Langa Langa, a student group that included Wemba, set a new standard for Congolese popular music ("soukous") with their youthful lyricism and absence of brass. Wemba later formed his own group, Viva La Musica, and from his home base of Paris created a loose society of the sappeur consisting of elegant, high fashion musicians. Soundchecks took a backseat to the fashion check with Wemba and his large coterie. His Womad appearances and recordings for the Real World label would eventually place him squarely on the world stage. Whether he's trading vocal lines and dancing the latest Congolese dance with the Viva La Musica crew, or singing a catchy Afro-Caribbean song with his international band, Wemba's internationally recognized, soaring vocals and charisma always capture the spotlight.

The Spirit of Africa benefit album couldn't be a better idea. With more than 25 million Africans living with HIV or AIDS, Africans make up nearly 70 percent of the adults and 80 percent of the children infected with the virus throughout the world. On this album, the Mercury Phoenix Trust and Real World Records join together to put out a formidable unified musical front, featuring groups or artists from 11 different African countries contributing songs that celebrate the resilience of the African people. The music spans a wide variety of material in a relatively limited 14-song program: from the lush vocal choir Imbizo to the haunting percussive thunder of the Drummers of Burundi, from the modern remix by techno producer Paul Oakenfold of Maryam Mursal to the traditional lyre playing of Ayub Ogada. These tracks showcase the rich musical tradition and the political and social importance of music in many African cultures. While Spirit Of Africa won't change the world, it's definitely part of the solution

After earlier albums that focused on the Australian didgeridoo and Central African Pygmy chant (later discovered by Deep Forest), Aussie Martin Craddock has broadened his scope for a truly global world beat fusion album. African beats are at the heart of these eight songs, but Gypsy, Arabic, jazz, and Celtic influences swirl through standout tracks like "Meeting of Tribes" and the techno remix of "Booma Lena." Cameroon water drums on "Ancestor's Voice" are like nothing you've ever heard.

Martin Cradick holds a unique relationship with the Baka hunter-gatherers, brilliant musicians from the Cameroon rainforest. Since their first release "Spirit of the Forest" in 1992, Baka Beyond has grown into a dynamic eight-piece band with musicians from across Africa and Celtic Europe. Each visit to the forest has also seen the Baka further their own music. On "Rhythm Tree" Baka and Baka Beyond come together with music recorded both in the UK and the Cameroon rainforest.

How do you try to capture the music of such a large, rich area as West Africa on one disc? The answer, of course, is that you can't, although this compilation does glide over some of the high spots -- but only some. So there are classic performances by Mali's Super Rail Band and Ali Farka Toure, plus Orchestra Baobob, revealing the influence Cuban music had on the nascent homegrown scenes in both Senegal and Mali. Altogether, it offers some semblance of a picture, fleshed out by the thrilling kora work of Toumani Diabate on "Djelika" and the south Mali wassoulou vocals of the excellent Oumou Sangare, who brings a rougher dimension to the proceedings. There's no Youssou N'Dour or Baaba Maal to show their stuff as Senegal's brightest stars (West Africa's biggest names, in fact), but Maal's sidekick, griot Mansour Seck, is represented. Perhaps one of the oddest choices is the inclusion of Dimi Mint Abba from Mauritania. Granted, she's the country's most famous singer, but there are others artists of greater stature from the region not included. E.T. Mensah is an astute pick for Ghanaian highlife, and Kante Manfila is probably a fair nominee for mande music. The real problem with this album isn't the music, which is glorious throughout, but the fact that it suffers from the size of its ambition and the inability to full realize it. Within a small range -- Ghana, Mali, Senegal, and Mauritania -- it does a partial job, but to call it a summing up of West African music is neither fair to the geographic area nor the listener.

The rich traditions of African rhythms are echoed in all popular American music, and jazz is no exception. In turn, black South Africans became enamored with the familiar styles and structures of jazz as early as the 1920s. By the '50s, most towns had a few local bands, with Johannesburg boasting the sharpest innovators. The township bands played in a dynamic style that mingled elements of swing with marabi, the three-chord melodies by which African jazz was most popularly known. This excellent collection gives a good idea about the range and expertise of many of the players, from Sipho Mabuse's delicately beautiful sax playing on "Thaba Bosiu" to young Lemmy Special's virtuoso pennywhistle stylings on "See You Later." Although this broad 16-song offering covers the '50s through the '90s, it only includes one vocal performance -- Miriam Makeba & the Skylarks' swinging "Siyavuya" -- making for a lopsided although spectacular view of South African jazz.

With 400 ethnic groups in Nigeria alone, The Rough Guide to the Music of Nigeria & Ghana (from the Rough Guide series) covers a vast canvas. So it's no wonder--and probably a sensible idea--that Fela Kuti, the Nigerian singer best known in the West, should not be included (on the grounds that his records are ubiquitous anyway). What is included here is dominated by that quintessentially mid-20th-century style known as highlife, best exemplified by its undisputed king E.T. Mensah. With his old-fashioned diction and immense charm, Mensah rides along on a gracefully Westernized instrumental sound. King Sunny Ade, who displaced him (and who was briefly picked up by Western promoters as a potential West African Bob Marley), prefers hard-driving rhythms and clean a cappella choruses. But on this superb CD charm is the key element, with a multitude of variations on local rhythms and instrumental combinations. Check out the two-string gourd molo, as played with brilliant panache by Captain Yaba; or revel in some of West Africa's best-loved party tracks, including those by C.K. Mann and Eric Agyeman. There's up-to-the-minute stuff from expatriate bands in America, and a wonderfully atmospheric gig with the most recent highlife king, Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe.

1. Okin Omo Ni (The King of the Children) - I.K. Dairo

This CD has the same high quality found in almost all of the Rough Guides. It's a nice mix of songs, including the inevitable selections from the great artists Thomas Mapfumo and Oliver Mtukudzi. There are no clunkers here and I am giving it four stars simply to differentiate it from African-music Rough Guides that give me more pleasure (e.g., the Congolese Soukous). Nevertheless, this is definitely worth picking up, if only to have the wonderful 13-minute Tornados vs. Dynamos by the Real Sounds, which narrates a local football match. The sense of humor blended with excellent musicianship makes this cut a real joy.

Hi, fantastic collection you have here, congratulations, goos blog. Two things: first, the albun "V.A World Percussion" have only half of it, 16 tracks and shows there 32. Second, all the albuns are rip in 128 or 192 KBP, is it possible to rip it in a better KBP rate? Sorry for the abuse, but such a jewel could be shared in 320 or so. Thank you very much for the collection, keep on with the good work, Best regards,
Fernando from Rio de Janeiro, Brasil
